About Us

Inhabit is headed by Andy Mazal, LEED-AP, RESNET-Certified Home Energy Rater and MBA. Having owned and renovated several residential and commercial investment properties, the idea for Inhabit was hatched as the need for rationality in building green became more and more obvious.

In 2006 he escaped the cubicle to focus on real estate investing and development, all the while focusing on becoming more involved and educated in green building technologies and materials. Along the way he became a
LEED Accredited Professional under the US Green Building Council’s guidelines as well as a RESNET-Certified Home Energy Rater (aka, HERS Rater).

He has hands-on experience in new construction, renovations, additions and remodels. What has been distilled into Inhabit’s approach to green building was developed primarily from personal experience, with his family’s own money on the line. As a building owner, property investor and a homeowner, he understands the perspectives of each of these different groups. He also understands that, while you want to build as green as possible (or as green as you’re required to build), money doesn’t grow on trees and tradeoffs are almost always inevitable. With Inhabit’s help, you will be able to understand how the various green building choices you can make match up to your own priorities and budget. The result will be a sustainable, healthy and efficient home or building, built with your specific priorities in mind.

Our Philosophy

Having been on “the other side of the table” many times, Inhabit understands what people are going through when having to sort through the myriad options associated with green building products and technologies. Unless forced to build green by government decree (as is the case in many places around Colorado, including and especially in Boulder) many people end up simply throwing in the towel, deciding that going green is too hard, too expensive or too confusing -- or all of the above. It does not have to be that way.

We are not architects, builders or contractors. Our role is to help building owners or home owners who are undertaking a construction or remodeling project sort through the wide world of green to make rational, informed decisions along the way. We will help our clients get the best green bang for their buck, based on a careful analysis of what is important to the client and why it is important, and how the various green products, technologies and designs can best be applied within this context. We will identify how -- or whether -- a particular green product, technology or design contributes towards meeting a client’s needs based on that client's specific motivations. These motivations include:

1)
Financial – Saving money, such as by reusing materials during construction or afterwards through lower operating costs.
2)
Health – avoiding the negative side-effects of traditional construction to provide for a healthier environment for the building’s occupants.
3)
Style / Aesthetics – Choosing green products because they are beautiful, unusual, durable or all of these things.
4)
Comfort – Resulting in a more comfortable building overall.
5)
Environmental / Societal – A “feel good” reason for going green; although it might not have any direct measurable financial, tangible or material benefit to the homeowner or building owner, some green decisions are based simply on contributing to the greater good.

These motivations are not mutually exclusive; rather, it’s likely that most decisions will involve more than one, if not all of them. Our first step is to discover your own motivations for building green, and we will base our work on these findings.
